Our Story

Meet the Simpsons

GrandfatherMtPic2Without question, it was “divine intervention” that brought Cindy and I together in 1999.  Cindy grew up in a Buddhist family in the fast paced city of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.  And I grew up in a Christian family in a quiet suburb of Akron, Ohio.  We could not have grown up farther apart.  Literally, the cities of our birth are exactly 180 degrees on the opposite side of the earth.

In 2000, Cindy and I married and the adventure began.  Since then we have served together with Every Nation Ministries planting churches and campus ministries in North Carolina, New Zealand and Malaysia.

But without question, our greatest joy is raising our four beautiful children Hannah (14), John Jr.(2), Christian (11) and Daniel (10).

John Simpson

Where to begin? I could start with my years growing up in a small town near Akron, Ohio; or my “wilderness years” following the Grateful Dead from coast to coast; instead I’ll start when true life began for me. At the age of 27, after years battling depression, drug abuse and on the verge of suicide, I had a radical encounter with the grace, love and forgiveness of God. It was over a “burger and a Bible” with a friend in Nashville, that God granted me the gift of repentance and I began to follow Jesus.

To help me grow in my new faith, I enrolled in a ministry training program called Every Nation Leadership Institute. Not long after, I felt the undeniable call to ministry and to give my life away preaching the Gospel, making disciples and planting churches.

Since 1997, I have served with Every Nation Ministries helping plant campus ministries and churches reaching university cities in the US, New Zealand and Malaysia.

The first few years, I served as a campus minster reaching out to international students at Vanderbilt, Duke, UNC and NC State. Then in 2004, my wife and I felt the call to join a team planting an Every Nation church and campus ministry in Auckland, New Zealand. What followed was an amazing four years seeing hundreds of young Kiwis, Pacific Islanders and Asians come to faith in Christ.

Then in 2008, we said good bye to New Zealand and our family moved to Penang, Malaysia to “do it all again” with another Every Nation church plant.   There we spent 3+ years planting a glorious multi-ethnic church in the Muslim nation of Malaysia with Filipinos, Malaysians and Americans on the leadership team. What a richly rewarding experience!

But in 2011, the Lord led us back to the United States to serve as missionaries and help plant churches and campus ministries with Every Nation.

We would love to love to have you join us on mission reaching the nations here in North Carolina!

Cindy Chia Simpson

Cindy grew up a city girl in the diverse Asian city of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Although her parents were very traditional Chinese and staunch Buddhists, the Lord began to woe Cindy’s heart at a young age. Then one day while crying out to her “unknown god” to reveal Himself to her, she heard an audible voice say to her “My name is Jesus.” From that moment on, Cindy has wholeheartedly pursued knowing Jesus and living for Him.

Not long after this encounter, Cindy came to the US to study at Western Michigan University. She became highly involved in campus ministry and a local church and upon graduation entered full time campus ministry. Ultimately, Cindy moved to Raleigh-Durham to serve with Every Nation Campus Ministries reaching international students at Duke, UNC and NC State. It was here we met, fell in love and were married. And as they say the rest is His story.

Cindy is a mighty teacher of God’s word, hearer of His voice, leader of women, with a special gift for counseling and inner healing. And she is incredibly gifted in linguistics, as she is fluent in English, Mandarin, Cantonese, Fujian, Indonesian and Malay. But her greatest role she plays is as my amazing wife and a home schooling mother of our four children Hannah (14), John Jr.(12), Christian (11) and Daniel (10).
